Where There’s a Will…

…there’s a way, and the Hawkeye wrestling team proved that yesterday in Happy Valley, where they knocked off top-rated and undefeated Penn State.

I didn’t catch the meet via local radio, but turned on the TV to watch the Big Ten Network’s tape-delayed broadcast last night. Needless to say, the No. 8 ranked Hawkeyes weren’t favored, and the announcers continually reminded…

To RAGBRAI or Not to RAGBRAI?

This weekend, the route for RAGBRAI (The Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa) XXXIX was announced. RAGBRAI is a seven-day bicycle ride that will take place the week of July 24-30. I have always thought about doing RAGBRAI, and this year is no exception. With Coralville hosting this year, there is no better time to ride my little heart…

Here’s to the Class of ’29

Recently, I’ve been thinking about yearbooks and how they served as a Facebook of sorts for UI students until 1986 when publication was discontinued. I’ve always been fascinated by UI yearbooks, since they contain a detailed history of campus life over the decades with class year student portraits, campus montages, and detailed indexes of student participation in a myriad of…

Move It—and Lose It!

Two hours and 40 minutes. That’s how much I’ve been officially active this past week (my athletic record would’ve been more impressive without a nasty asthma attack). How do I know the precise details of my yoga, strength-training, and kickboxing workouts? And why am I obsessing about it?

Because I’m participating in the Live Healthy Iowa 100 Day Wellness Challenge—along with…

Iowa Top Ten Lists

Last Sunday, the Sioux City Journal published “Ten reasons why it’s great to be a Hawkeye” in the education section of the paper. A colleague at the university brought it to my attention, and I immediately wanted to see how closely their ten reasons aligned with, or were supported by, the University of Iowa Alumni Association’s top ten reasons to…

Ask Not What Your Country Can Do For You…

(Left: Chelsey and Lily) (Right: Iowa Voyagers student assistant Brittany Suson explains the Romania service trip facts.)

In this 50th anniversary year of John F. Kennedy’s historic inaugural address, it is heartening to know there is a new generation of young people that is heeding his call to service. This is very apparent at the UI Volunteer Fair held…

S.T.A.T. Plans for the Semester

Last night was the S.T.A.T. Ambassadors’ first general meeting of the semester. Walking into a room filled with eager Ambassadors ready to take on a new semester, I found my place at the front table. It has been a great honor to take on a new position among the S.T.A.T. Ambassadors as the new vice president of communications.

The new semester…

Be Oscar-Ready

The nominations for the 2011 Oscars were announced this morning, and unsurprisingly, I have only seen three of the ten films up for best motion picture (Toy Story 3, Inception, and The Social Network). I probably wouldn’t have seen Toy Story 3 if it weren’t for a Homecoming event this past fall, which offered a free screening of the movie…

Big Ten Teamwork

The Big Ten Conference stokes the competitive spirit. We compete with our conference foes on the gridirons, courts, fields, and mats, as well as in our quest to recruit top-performing students to our classrooms. When it comes to alumni relations, however, we have grand opportunities for partnerships. Just last Thursday, the Big Ten alumni associations hosted a career-focused networking…

Brain Boggling

One of the benefits of being a member of Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow (S.TA.T.)—in addition to all the great discounts around town—is that students receive a cool promotional product.  I am currently working on the new S.T.A.T. premium for this year.  The marketing intern and I have been boggling our brains trying to come…
