Hawkeye History: January 23, 1989

During a dual against Minnesota, Iowa wrestler Tom Brands won his match, helping the squad defeat the Golden Gophers and bring its record to 11-1. Brands went on to become an assistant wrestling coach at Iowa before leaving for a head coaching position at Virginia Tech. In 2006, he returned to Iowa City as head coach of the Hawkeye wrestling team.

- The previous evening, Joe Montana and Jerry Rice led the San Francisco 49ers to a victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl XXIII – a game many regard among the all-time best due to a game-winning touchdown by San Francisco with 39 seconds left in the fourth quarter.
