Traversing the streets of Cuba are tens of thousands of American cars from the 1950s and 60s, manufactured and imported before the embargo of 1962. Some visitors to the country feel like they’ve gone back in time after seeing so many vintage cars still on the road.
Taking a closer look, the ingenuity of the Cuban people in keeping these cars running is apparent—many cars have engines and transmissions transplanted from Russian cars and sometimes even tractors.
As part of the full-time schedule of educational activities in this people-to-people exchange program, viewing the cars of Cuba is just one of many unique sights on this Caribbean island, long-closed to American travelers.
