The answer to this week’s trivia question (“What does the Iowa football program’s ANF logo stand for?”) is, of course, America Needs Farmers.
During the 1985 season, Iowa football coach Hayden Fry put the message on the team’s helmets to call attention to the plight of the American farmer, where many family farms were having trying times. In a season when the Hawks went 10-1 with a Big Ten Championship and Rose Bowl berth, Fry’s use of the increased national exposure to help farmers was received warmly. The initiative continues today with NFL player and former Hawkeye Dallas Clark as the face of the campaign.
