Iowa Homecoming History: 1939

During Nile Kinnick’s Heisman-winning season, Minnesota was threatening to derail the Hawkeyes’ season in their Homecoming matchup on November 18.

It took a touchdown pass and interception by Kinnick at the end of the game to seal the 13-9 Iowa win. Fans screamed themselves hoarse, and the celebration was so great it made an impression on the administration. UI President Eugene Gilmore and the Board of Deans suspended all classes on Monday, declaring it an official holiday. As a bonus, Iowa claimed the Floyd of Rosedale trophy for the very first time!
