In the 57 Iowa vs. Michigan football matchups so far, Michigan holds a 40-13-4 record over the Hawkeyes. But, in recent years, Iowa has ruled the series. It’s fair to say Michigan might be out for revenge tomorrow.
In 2002, a season we all know and love, the Hawks’ recorded their first road win against Michigan since 1990. Iowa was ranked No. 14 at the time and Michigan No. 8, and no one really expected the pounding the Wolverines suffered at the hands of the Hawks in Ann Arbor. Both the offense and defense delivered impeccable performances: Brad Banks threw for 223 yards and three touchdowns, and the defensive line held the Wolverines to just 22 rushing yards on 20 carries.
That game is often listed by many Hawkeye fans among their top football memories.
Afterward, the jubilation was intense. Coach Kirk Ferentz ended up dripping in Gatorade with tears in his eyes.
“I enjoyed that,” he said.
So did we.
