Editor’s Note: Last month, Iowa Alumni Magazine brought you the story of former UI professor Earl Rose, who served as Dallas County medical examiner when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated on Nov. 22, 1963. While Secret Service agents prepared to whisk the president’s body back to Washington, D.C. on Air Force One, Rose argued—unsuccessfully—that he was legally compelled to…

Dog-Gone Happy!

Is there anything cuter than a fuzzy critter showing school spirit? We think not. Earlier this year, Las Vegas IOWA Club leader Kristy Hingtgen, 96BS, was unpacking a box of pom-poms—sent to her by the UIAA to use at Hawkeye gatherings—when she heard a rustling. She turned around to see little Owen getting into mischief.

Throughout the year, the UIAA helps…

A Floating Enterprise

Several weeks ago, when Homecoming 2012 plans began to formulate, the UIAA’s S.T.A.T. Ambassadors decided to create a parade float on behalf of the UIAA. The idea was to give a visual representation of how the alumni association connects graduates back to campus, no matter where they live. We located a model of the Old Capitol created several years ago…

What the Kale?

Add this to the list of quirky items we’ve had to rush out and get for an Iowa Alumni Magazine photo. Last Friday, Editor Tina Owen—responding to art director LeaAnn Henry’s need for the perfect, colorful image for a feature design—sped over to New Pioneer Cooperative for several containers of bright green kale salad. Want to know why…

UI Opera Dazzles Des Moines

Last Friday, over 30 attendees enjoyed a behind-the-scenes look at the UI’s production of H.M.S. Pinafore during our Lifelong Learning event in Des Moines. The comic opera’s music, direction, and staging were all discussed during a roundtable featuring director John Cameron, musical director William LaRue Jones, and set designer Margaret Wenk-Kuchlbauer, moderated by WorldCanvass host Joan Kjaer. As a special treat,…

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of meeting former UI student Zach Wahls again to hear the story of his life—being raised by two same-sex parents.

Zach gave a special reading from his newly released book, My Two Moms: Lessons of Love, Strength and What Makes a Family. During his time at Prairie Lights, Zach also answered questions from a…

Question of the Week: April 13, 2012

Whether it’s an old standby like coffee or an energy drink chock-full of vitamins, everyone gets their day started with a beverage.

This week, we’re wondering: What’s your morning drink of choice?

I enjoy regular coffee with a shot of orange soda mixed in for some sweetness and extra caffeine.

One randomly-selected commenter will receive the cool UIAA mug pictured above with some goodies…
