Across the Ages

Last week, our Lifelong Learning event at Melrose Meadows brought generations together for a special presentation. UI Associate Director of Student Development David Gould, 92MA, paired students with senior citizens to discuss their respective dreams, life lessons, and thoughts on aging. The participants then took the results of their dialogue and recorded two songs, one about the seniors’ reflections on…

Matching Up Nicely

Setting aside school rivalries, 59 alumni from the University of Iowa, Iowa State University, and the University of Northern Iowa descended on West Des Moines last night for our Mascot Matchmaker event. Whether looking for love or just to meet new friends, participants enjoyed a fun and cozy atmosphere at the Blue Moon Dueling Piano Bar. Some even climbed on…

Dancing For The Kids

We have some special guests at the Levitt Center today–Dance Marathon morale captains performing a synchronized dance number. Surviving Winter

Today in Iowa City, we’re enjoying blue skies and balmy temperatures up to 51F. Outside the alumni association offices, bright green spears of daffodils are appearing in the garden beds. Anyone would think we’d skipped winter altogether and headed straight into spring!

Of course, Iowa winters can be deceptive. We do have at least two more months in which plummeting temperatures,…

Thankful

Today I found out I’m one of the richest people in the world.

You wouldn’t think it if you saw my car or looked at my bank account. However, when I put my modest income into the “How Rich Am I?” calculator, hosted by an international non-profit organization that fights poverty, I discovered I’m wealthy compared to most people on planet…

Coming of Age for Facebook

My daughter Ashley will turn 13 years old this Sunday. It seems like just yesterday that her interests included naptime, going to the park, and playing dress up with friends. Today, young teen life is about cell phones, computers, and talking with friends (though generally not face-to-face). Almost as though it were a rite of passage, my daughter has been…

Spreading the Hawkeye Cheer

What’s better than being a Hawkeye at Homecoming? Sharing your Hawkeye spirit with someone new to the UI scene.

This week, my kid sister and brother are visiting from Alabama. They never experienced the thrill of an Iowa game day until this past Saturday when I took them to their first college football matchup. We practiced Hawkeye cheers at the UIAA…
